Hans Valentin Hube


HansValentin Hube was a German general who served in the German Army during the First and Second World Wars. He was one ofpeople to be awarded the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds . The Knights Cross of the Iron Cross and its higher grade the Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. At the time of its presentation to Hube it was Germanys highest military decoration. He died in an airplane crash in April 1944. Hube was nicknamed der Mensch by his troops during the Second World War.

Hube was born onOctober 1890 in Naumburg an der Saale in the Prussian Province of Saxony within the German Empire, the son of a Oberst . After graduation with his Abitur from the Domgymnasium Naumburg, a secondary school, he volunteered for military service in the Imperial German Army onFebruary 1909. As a Fahnenjunker , he was assigned to InfantryRegiment Nr.Frst Leopold von AnhaltDessau, a regiment of the 7. Division based at Magdeburg. Aftermonths of service, he was promoted to Leutnant onAugust 1910.
